“Thank you. What do you think he meant by that?”

Dan said, “I’ve always hated that study. I’m really glad to have a reason not to go in it again.”

They had agreed that they would go back to Dan’s house for supper before Nicole returned to London. When they had chosen the train option, they had forgotten the elusiveness of rural cabs. They had to wait shivering in the dark on the drive outside the school for twenty minutes for the cab. Through the large windows, they could see boys and girls lining up to have something for tea out of large metal urns. The clatter of cooking equipment drifted out of the open windows in the dining room.

Nicole sat on a mossy, damp bench next to Dan and checked her emails. Martha was demanding to know when she would speak to Bee. She replied that she planned to talk to her tomorrow night. Her father wanted to know about progress with the funeral again.

Gal… Gal had been interviewed by the police about an allegation of physical assault against a female colleague at an office party and wanted to know what he should do.

She walked out of Dan’s earshot and called Gal. “Hi. I got your email. What on earth?”

“I was in the office this morning and these two police officers turned up at reception. Man and woman. Mr Nice and Mrs Nasty. They made sure all the staff saw them and then they interviewed me in my office. This woman, a salesperson who used to work for us, is accusing me of sexual assault at the Christmas party. There were loads of witnesses, apparently.”

In a low voice Nicole said, “Is it she just trying it on or is there something to it? I need to know.”

“She had a massive drink problem and missed all her targets. She jumped on me in front of a bunch of people. I pushed her away. Two months ago, in January, we had to put her on performance review. We gave her loads of chances. She just wasn’t up to it.”

“It doesn’t look good though, Gal, does it? You need to keep out of trouble.”

“I never do things like that. Never. I know what an easy target I could be. And I am categorically not that sort of person.” Nicole had to agree with that. “I don’t get why the police would want to humiliate me? One of the investors has got wind of it. Having kittens, is that what you all say? Timing’s shit.”

Nicole agreed to keep an eye out for anything overnight and that they would discuss it in the office the next day. It was serious and, if she found there was any truth in it, she would be off like a shot. Gal didn’t sound his usual ebullient self. She hoped he had the ability to bounce back like her first impressions of him had led her to believe.

The cab, a black Ford Mondeo, battered outside, warm and smelly, as it turned out, inside, drew up alongside them.
